This presentation will focus on the concept that there are seven skills that pediatricians should develop when working with schools. Pediatricians can develop some or all of these skills depending on their needs and interests; for the pediatrician beginning interaction with schools and school personnel, the skills are a menu from which to choose. The following section of this kit focuses on the individual skills.

The seven skills are:

  2. Drafting and revising school policies
  3. Consulting with schools about health education
  4. Communicating health messages
  5. Serving on school health advisory councils
  6. Assessing community needs and determining service parameters
  7. Evaluating the effectiveness of school health programs
